Picasso was sitting at a café when a woman approached him and asked him to draw a portrait of her. Picasso acquiesced and quickly sketched her. He then handed her the sketch, with which she was very pleased, and she asked him how much she owed him.

Picasso replied: “$5,000.”
The woman protested, “But it took you only five minutes.”
“No, madam.  It took me all my life,” replied Picasso.

I think its a little ridiculous to hear of individuals who depreciate artwork, because it was not done on canvas or on a moleskin. Artist who have chosen a Wacom tablet as their brush and Corel Painter or Adobe Illustrator as their canvas have done so to assert themselves in a genre where the technology is ground breaking, only surpassed by the skill of the artist.

Why does it cost so much when you did the artwork in a computer? Well, most people have cameras, does that make them  photographers? Most houses come with a kitchen, does owning a kitchen make you a chef? If you are a woman and own makeup, does owning the makeup make you a makeup artist?

I would say the answer to these, is no, as a skill is needed to use these. Even if the skill is a poor one at best. Skill is not something automatically acquired because something was purchased. It`s honed, sharpened and perfected with each execution. Technology is a wonderful thing. Embracing it opens doors to unusual and new ways to create art.
